The Evening Youth Service (EYS) is lively and very different. The congregation (~25 strong) is about half 'old fogies' (like Steve) and half teenagers. We dispense with ordered lines of chairs and gather in groups round tables so we can chat better. The extra space also means we get to play games on the service theme halfway through. The preacher is challenged to give a short, pithy address. Our young people sometimes attend Soul Survivor and our power point based worship reflects this. About the only thing limiting our uptake of new music is how quickly the band are able to learn the songs. 'Interactive' is the name of things when it comes to prayer at EYS. Sometimes we stand up and wander round, sometimes we set fire to things (mostly candles, occasionally Spencer!) Pictures, posters and all sorts of things are also used to get us involved in praying to God. With the morning congregation we share both a love of Jesus and a love of snacks and light beverages. So, at the end of our services we always provide refreshements and munch on them over games of pool, table tennis and throwing things (sometimes at Steve, mostly at Spencer). But just so we're clear, our desire is to have Jesus in the centre of every single thing we do during the service. It's just we think that he likes to be worshipped by people who are finding worship a whole lot of fun. |
